Preschool News Week of November 28-December 2

What We've Been Learning:

Whole Group Learning:

We are beginning a study on cooking and kicked off our learning for the week with a discussion on our new dramatic center....a Bakery!  We generated lists of people (baker, decorator, customers, cashier), different bakery items (pies, cookies, cakes, donuts, breads, cupcakes) and props we would need (spoons, pans, ingredients, etc.) for our bakery.  We read a book called Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes.  We will also read Froggy Bakes a Cake.

Read it Again: We are reading The Night Before Preschool.  Our goals for this week are: to recognize the left to right and top to bottom directionality of print, to understand and use words representing time concepts such as first, next, then and last, to segment words into syllables and blend syllables into words, and to identify and describe one or more major events in the story.

Small Group Learning:

  • Story retelling activity for The Napping House
  • Number identification and counting with unifex cubes with a partner
  • RIA: segmenting and blending syllables activity and sequencing the events of our day using first, then, next and last.
  • Journals
  • Syllable Sorting Game
  • Jolly Phonics: Rr

Centers:

Dramatic Play: Bakery
Blocks: Gears
Sensory: Macaroni
Art: Decorating cookies, cakes, donuts and cupcakes for our dramatic play center
Science: Scales focusing on the concepts of heavier/lighter/balancing
Puzzles: Christmas floor puzzles
Writing: Bakery words
Library Flannel Board: The Napping House

Can you help?

We would like to do some baking activities this month and while I am happy to provide items for this, if you would like to donate to the cause, it would be appreciated.  We plan to decorate sugar cookies and will need 3 cans of frosting and holiday sprinkles.  I will provide the cookies.  We also would like to dip pretzel sticks and will need almond bark, pretzel sticks and sprinkles.  If you have a knack for cake or cookie decorating, work in a bakery or would like to do a cooking activity with our preschoolers, please let me know.

Reminders:

The December calendar is now available on our blog.  Please watch for changing weather and make sure our preschoolers have hats, gloves and a warm coat for those chilly days!

Reading at Home Program begins for our 4 year old preschoolers.  Each 4 year old will be coming home with a baggie that includes a book and an activity card.  Please plan on reading the book at least 3 different times with your child and choose a few things to do each time off of the activity card. When you are finished, please return the book and activity card in the baggie and a new book will be sent home.  Thanks for your cooperation.

Please Enjoy Pictures of Our Learning!

Nothing gets a preschooler's heart pumping like balloons!

 Preparing our props!

How many times can you hit the balloon without letting it hit the ground?
These two counted to 35 before it hit the ground!  Determination!!

Playing with balloons is really a great workout:
it raises the heart rate, improves coordination and works many muscle groups!  :)

Thanks for reading and have a great rest of your week!
