Pictures from our guest speaker

Sue Lovik from Grantwood AEA shared a slide show with the students of her adventures scuba diving.  We were able to see pictures of the sea creatures she saw on her trips and the gear that she uses while scuba diving.
She gave the students the opportunity to try on the gear.
What a neat experience for our class.
We thank Miss Sue very much for sharing her time and experiences with us!

Preschool News Week of February 22-26

What we are learning:

Read it Again:  A Color of His Own By Leo Lionni
Print Knowledge:  We continue to describe aspects of books (such as illustrator, author, cover, title page) and of print (word, letter, spell, read and write.)

Vocabulary: We are working on using words to describe things and actions (adjectives and adverbs).  The students drew a chameleon and had to use words to describe how they made their chameleon look (stripes, spotted, rainbow, etc.).

Narrative: We are working on producing personal stories that have a clear beginning, middle and end.  We discussed how the chameleon found a friend and we generated ideas on what we like to do with our friends.

Phonological Awareness:  We are working on producing words that share a rhyming pattern.  We used magnet letters and built words that had the rime -ad because the chameleon was sad that he didn't have his own color.  Each student got to choose a magnet letter to put in front of the letters -ad to make new words that rhymed with sad.  We did discuss real words vs. nonsense words as well.

Additional Children's Literature:  Body in the Group (Incredible Flexible You) and Commotion in the Ocean

Jolly Phonics Letter: Zz

Special Visitor:  Sue Lovik from Grantwood AEA will be visiting on Thursday to share her experiences scuba diving with the students.  She will be bringing her gear and pictures and videos of her experiences.  We are so excited for this visit!

Next week:  I can't believe it will be March!  We will be working on journaling, exploring movement patterns, number recognition, measuring and making comparisons and counting items to match numbers.

Reminder:  Preschool Family Fun Night is Thursday, March 3 from 6:00-7:30 in the Keystone Elementary Gym.  Please join us for fun family activities and snacks.

Preschool News Week of February 15-19

What we are learning:

Read it Again:  Dog Breath
Print Knowledge: We are comparing illustrations on the title page with the illustration on the cover and discussing how they are alike and how they are different.

Vocabulary: We are talking about the meaning of words including how words can have more than one meaning.  Our target words are breathtaking, breathless, and lose your breath.

Narrative: We are discussing a time that someone surprised us or helped us to produce a personal story that has a clear beginning, middle and end.

Phonological Awareness: We worked on producing words that share a rhyming pattern for the (-og) words.  Example: frog, dog, log.

Additional Children's Literature:  Under the Sea  We are completing a KWL chart to discover what we know about the ocean, what we want to know and finally we will record what we have learned.  We will then find literature and other resources to find answers to our questions.

Sensory Bottles:  We created a jelly fish in a bottle and an ocean in a bottle to go along with our under the sea theme.  They turned out very cool.  If you google ocean in a bottle or jelly fish in a bottle you will find instructions on how to make your own at home.  These bottles can be used to encourage attention and concentration, scientific exploration and observation as well as provide a calming effect for your child.  They are pretty fun to create and look at for adults too!

Jolly Phonics Letter:  Jj

Next week:  We will be talking about patterns and working on finishing our number writing books.

Reminder:  Please continue to send boots with your child.  As the temperatures warm, the path to our playground becomes very muddy and I wouldn't want any shoes to get ruined!
